Dental Examination
Before beginning orthodontic treatment we require a clearance for your general dentist. A cleaning and exam along with any necessary fillings must be completed before braces are placed. During treatment, it is very important for you to keep regular 4 to 6-month checkups with your dentist.

If early/interceptive orthodontic treatment ( Phase One Treatment ) is advisable it will often save the patient from jaw surgery or more extensive (and expensive) treatment later on.
Tooth Extractions
Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e., expanders, growth appliances, or partial/limited braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten and is usually 9 to 12 months long. This treatment is often recommended to make more space for developing teeth when early signs of severe crowding are present, and to correct crossbites (reverse bite relationships), severe overbites, underbites, premature loss of "baby" teeth, tooth eruption abnormalities, or harmful oral habits. Any problem where dental arches need to be developed, jaws need to be widened, and/or jaw growth needs to be "stimulated", or modified, would be started before all permanent teeth are in. Phase I treatment creates a good foundation for the erupting permanent teeth, and corrects growth/jaw problems that would otherwise require permanent tooth extractions, complex/extensive orthodontic treatment, and/or jaw surgery later.

Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to additional full-time, post-doctoral education in an accredited orthodontic specialty residency program supervised by orthodontists. By the way, "ortho" comes from Greek for "straight" or "correct" and "dontic" means "teeth", and "dentofacial" is from Greek for "teeth" plus "face" while "ortho" again means "straight" and "pedic" means "child." Orthodontists are dental specialists that diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They correct a wide variety of malocclusions (improperly aligned teeth, bite, and/or jaws) in young children, teens/adolescents, and adults.
